About the Word to EPUB Online Free Tool
The Word to EPUB Online Free Tool converts a document into EPUB, the open ebook format read by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Calibre, and almost every e-reader except Kindle.
EPUB text reflows: it adapts to the reader’s screen size and chosen font, unlike a PDF, which holds a fixed page. That is what makes an ebook comfortable on a phone or e-ink display.
Conversion runs on the IO Tools server using LibreOffice, the same engine behind most open-source document pipelines. Uploaded files are converted and deleted immediately; they are never stored or shared.
This tool has no in-browser mode. A browser has no office engine of its own, so if the server is unavailable the tool says so plainly rather than producing a poor imitation.
How to Use Word to EPUB Online

Getting a Good Ebook
Structure matters more than styling:
- Use real Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles in your document. The converter builds the ebook’s table of contents from them, and text styled to merely look like a heading produces none.
- Images are embedded and scale to the reader’s screen.
- Fixed page layout, headers, footers, and page numbers are dropped, because reflowing text has no fixed pages to attach them to.
- Multi-column layouts collapse to a single flowing column.
Common Use Cases
- Publishing a manuscript, guide, or manual as a readable ebook.
- Turning long documents into something comfortable to read on a phone or e-reader.
- Producing an EPUB to submit to a store or convert onward to Kindle format.
Quick FAQ
Will my original file be changed?
No. The EPUB is generated as a separate file.
Are files uploaded?
Yes. Building a valid EPUB needs a document engine a browser does not have, so the file is sent to the IO Tools server, converted with LibreOffice, returned, and deleted immediately.
Will it work on a Kindle?
Not directly. Kindle uses its own formats, though modern Kindles accept EPUB sent via Send to Kindle, and Calibre can convert the file if you prefer.
Why has my table of contents not appeared?
It is built from real heading styles. If your headings are just bold, enlarged text, apply Heading 1 and Heading 2 in Word first, then convert again.
Why does the layout look different?
That is the point of an ebook. EPUB text reflows to fit the reader’s screen and font choice, so fixed page layout is deliberately not preserved. Use the Word to PDF tool if you need a fixed page.
