About the PDF/A Converter Online Free Tool
The PDF/A Converter turns a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OpenDocument file into PDF/A-2b, the ISO-standardised PDF profile designed for long-term archiving.
PDF/A differs from an ordinary PDF in what it forbids. Every font must be embedded, so the document renders identically decades from now on a machine that has none of your fonts. External references, JavaScript, audio, video, and encryption are all disallowed, because none of them can be guaranteed to still work.
Conversion runs on the IO Tools server using LibreOffice, the same engine behind most open-source document pipelines. Uploaded files are converted and deleted immediately; they are never stored or shared.
Many institutions require it by name: court filings, thesis submissions, tax and regulatory records, and public-sector document management systems commonly specify PDF/A rather than plain PDF.
This tool has no in-browser mode. A browser has no office engine of its own, so if the server is unavailable the tool says so plainly rather than producing a poor imitation.
How to Use PDF/A Converter Online
- Choose a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OpenDocument file.
- Convert it to PDF/A.
- Review the preview and download the archival PDF.
What PDF/A Changes
Stricter than an ordinary PDF:
- All fonts are embedded, so the file is usually larger than a normal PDF of the same document.
- Transparency and some colour effects are flattened to meet the standard.
- Encryption is not permitted, so a PDF/A file cannot be password protected.
- The output is PDF/A-2b, the profile most institutions ask for. If yours specifies PDF/A-1b or 3b, check before submitting.
Common Use Cases
- Thesis, dissertation, and academic submissions that specify PDF/A.
- Court filings, tax records, and regulatory documents with retention requirements.
- Archiving business records so they stay readable long after the software that made them.
Quick FAQ
Will my original file be changed?
No. The PDF/A is generated as a separate file.
Are files uploaded?
Yes. Producing a compliant PDF/A needs a document engine a browser does not have, so the file is sent to the IO Tools server, converted with LibreOffice, returned, and deleted immediately.
Which PDF/A version do I get?
PDF/A-2b, the most widely accepted profile. If your institution names a different one, confirm before you submit.
Why is the file bigger than a normal PDF?
PDF/A requires every font to be embedded rather than referenced. That is what makes it render the same decades from now, and it costs some size.
Can I password protect a PDF/A?
No. The standard forbids encryption, because a file no one can open is not an archive. Use the PDF Protect tool on an ordinary PDF instead.
