About the Word and ODT Converter

The Word and ODT Converter moves documents between Microsoft Word format and OpenDocument text, the native format of LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and many government and academic systems.

The direction is chosen for you: give it an .odt and you get a .docx back, give it a .docx, .doc, or .rtf and you get an .odt.

Conversion runs on the IO Tools server using LibreOffice, the same engine behind most open-source document pipelines. Uploaded files are converted and deleted immediately; they are never stored or shared.

This tool has no in-browser mode. A browser has no office engine of its own, so if the server is unavailable the tool says so plainly rather than producing a poor imitation.

Very little. Both are open XML formats with close feature sets. Complex field codes, some macros, and a few Word-specific layout features can shift, so check the output before sending it on.
