About the Excel and ODS Converter

The Excel and ODS Converter moves workbooks between Microsoft Excel format and OpenDocument spreadsheet, the native format of LibreOffice Calc and many public-sector systems.

The direction is chosen for you: give it an .ods and you get an .xlsx back, give it an .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls and you get an .ods.

Conversion runs on the IO Tools server using LibreOffice, the same engine behind most open-source document pipelines. Uploaded files are converted and deleted immediately; they are never stored or shared.

This tool has no in-browser mode. A browser has no office engine of its own, so if the server is unavailable the tool says so plainly rather than producing a poor imitation.

Which Way It Converts

The input decides the output:

Will my original file be changed?
No. The converted file is generated separately.

Are files uploaded?
Yes. Reading and writing both spreadsheet formats needs an office engine a browser does not have, so the file is sent to the IO Tools server, converted with LibreOffice, returned, and deleted immediately.

Do formulas survive?
Yes, in both directions. Formulas are converted rather than flattened to values. A few application-specific functions have no counterpart and should be checked.

Are all worksheets kept?
Yes. Every sheet is converted, in the original order.
