About The Word Counter

This free online Word Counter analyzes pasted text and reports total words, unique words, characters, characters without spaces, reading time, and speaking time. It is useful for drafts, essays, articles, scripts, descriptions, form copy, and any text that needs a quick length check.

The tool runs in your browser and uses a practical word-matching method for everyday text. By default, standalone numbers are not counted as words; turn on the number option when numeric tokens should be included in the word total.

How to Count Words Online

  1. Paste or type your content into Text input.
  2. Turn on Include numbers as words only when numbers should be counted in the word total.
  3. Click Count Words to generate the report.
  4. Use Copy Output when you need to share the metrics with a draft, brief, or review note.

Choosing Options Correctly

Include numbers as words:
- Leave it OFF for normal prose, articles, essays, and marketing copy.
- Turn it ON for technical notes, invoices, logs, financial text, or reports where numbers should count as spoken or reviewed tokens.

Reading and speaking time:
- Reading time is estimated from the word count for a typical reading pace.
- Speaking time is estimated more slowly, which is better for scripts, presentations, and voiceover drafts.

Common Use Cases

  • Check essay, article, blog post, or assignment word counts.
  • Estimate script, presentation, podcast, or voiceover timing.
  • Review copy length before submitting forms, descriptions, or editorial drafts.
  • Compare total words and unique words to spot repetition in pasted text.
