About The Letter Counter

This free online Letter Counter analyzes pasted text and reports letters, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, spaces, punctuation or symbols, and total characters. It is useful when you need a quick character breakdown for copy, forms, labels, messages, scripts, and short text blocks.

The tool runs in your browser and counts Unicode letters, numbers, whitespace, and remaining punctuation or symbols separately. This makes it more useful than a simple character counter when you need to understand what kind of characters are present in the text.

How to Count Letters Online

  1. Paste or type your content into Text input.
  2. Click Count Letters to generate the character report.
  3. Review the letter, digit, space, symbol, and total character counts.
  4. Use Copy Output when you need to share or save the count report.

Understanding the Counts

Letters:
- Counts alphabetic characters from the pasted text.
- Uppercase and lowercase letters are also broken out separately.

Digits and spaces:
- Digits count numeric characters such as 0 through 9 and other Unicode number characters.
- Spaces count whitespace characters, including line breaks and tabs.

Punctuation/symbols:
- Counts characters that are not letters, digits, or whitespace.
- This includes punctuation marks, symbols, and many special characters.

Common Use Cases

  • Check whether text fits a character-limited field, title, caption, or label.
  • Review uppercase and lowercase balance in headings, product names, or pasted copy.
  • Inspect strings that mix letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, and symbols.
  • Prepare text for forms, templates, design layouts, or validation rules.

Quick FAQ

Does this count words?
It focuses on characters, letters, spaces, punctuation, and symbols. Use Word Counter for word-level metrics.

Are spaces included in total characters?
Yes when the metric says total characters. Letter-only counts exclude spaces and punctuation.

Why are punctuation and symbols grouped together?
They are non-letter characters, so the tool groups them separately from alphabetic counts.

Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. Letter counting is designed to run in the browser.
