About the Earthing Conductor Sizing Calculator Online Free Tool
The Earthing Conductor Sizing Calculator Online Free Tool estimates the conductor cross-sectional area required to withstand a specified fault current for a specified clearing time. It applies the adiabatic relationship S = I x sqrt(t) / k and then selects the next available size from the tool's built-in list.
This is a focused earth conductor size calculation, not a complete earthing design calculator. It does not calculate electrode resistance, earth-fault loop impedance, touch voltage, soil behavior, current-carrying capacity, or every mechanical and installation requirement.
How to Calculate Earthing Conductor Size
- Enter the prospective fault current in kiloamps.
- Enter the protective-device clearing time in seconds.
- Enter the applicable material constant
k. - Enter the minimum standard conductor size that the design must satisfy.
- Select Calculate.
- Review both the calculated adiabatic area and the selected listed size.
Understanding the Earthing Cable Calculation
Fault current:
The calculator converts the entered value from kA to A before applying the equation. Because required area is directly proportional to fault current, an underestimated current can produce an undersized result.
Clearing time:
Required area increases with the square root of fault duration. Use a defensible disconnection time for the protective device and fault level being assessed.
Material constant k:
The value of k depends on factors such as conductor material, insulation, and permitted initial and final temperatures. The tool does not choose or verify this value, so it must come from the applicable standard, design method, or approved engineering reference.
Minimum standard size:
The calculator compares the adiabatic result with your entered minimum, then selects the next value from 6, 10, 16, 25, 35, 50, 70, 95, 120, 150, 185, 240, 300, 400, 500, or 630 mm2. It reports an error if the controlling area exceeds 630 mm2.
Earthing Conductor Calculation Example
With a 25 kA fault current, 0.5 second clearing time, k = 115, and a 25 mm2 minimum, the equation gives approximately 153.72 mm2. The next size in the calculator's list is 185 mm2. This is an illustration of the tool's arithmetic, not an installation recommendation.

No. You must enter a value appropriate to the conductor, insulation, temperature limits, and governing design rules.
Does this replace an electrical design or code check?
No. A qualified designer must also verify protective-device behavior, installation method, bonding, mechanical minimums, corrosion, fault-loop conditions, and applicable regulations.
Why is the selected size larger than the calculated area?
The tool rounds upward to the next value in its built-in standard-size list and also enforces the minimum size you entered.
Can it calculate an earth electrode or grid?
No. It performs only the displayed adiabatic conductor calculation.
